Shot in the middle of painting in the studio, quite random but hopefully a little bit informative and interesting if you’re battling with distant tree colours.

 

The first part of this epic multi-episode tutorial painting a New Zealand seascape in oils.

 

Part 2 of the Mountain Painting and the dedicated snow painting video. I'm continuing to experiment and learn technique myself, but this is the method I have found works the best for me - mainly with the palette knife and a little brushwork.

This is how I paint a realistic wave - this is the information I would have liked when I started out trying to paint the sea. Here in Papamoa NZ I take landscape/seascape oil painting classes, in these videos I am trying to answer the familiar questions the people in my classes have. This is part 1, there will be part two, and I will do more waves.

Painting a seascape in oils on location in New Zealand - Waiotahi Beach.

 

Taking you through my mixing of sky colours, trying to keep it interesting because my students who come to my classes here in Papamoa have found this really helpful - so it may help someone out there.

Part one Painting hanging mist in the mountains wet into wet in my block in stage. This is a really fun and easy technique to achieve subtle transitions which create realistic mist and cloud.

A quick video while I was mixing some earth tones from my primary palette. And some painting footage midway through a New Zealand mountain-scape, here in NZ. My Palette; Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue, Red Madder, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Titanium White.

Plein Air Painting in Oil Paint - Mount Maunganui NZ. A quick look into my approach and method to a fast little plein air, battling changing light as the sun goes down on a beautiful autumn day here in NZ.

 

Recorded via Facebook live on the 26th March 2020, so it's raw footage. Painting a seascape from Mount Maunganui beach NZ, I painted this in one session, just under 60 mins. Hopefully it sheds some light in my method and technique, this the same way I approach a Plein Air painting.
