Small Works
From these few photos you’ll see I’ve been painting small. Almost tiny compared to most of my previous work. This started with a couple of ‘painted sketches’ for larger works, I enjoyed the small size so much I haven’t stopped.
They are fun to paint, they don’t take me weeks to complete and it will give an offering of affordable original oil paintings.
But what I am loving most is that I can be prolific, I can paint many more paintings this way. My wife and I love exploring NZ, the search for finding something to paint is often equally as fun as the painting.
And with a small piece of work I can be more experimental, to be honest one of my favourite new works is a humble beach access in Papamoa, and would have I bothered attempting this on a medium/large canvas? I’m not sure I would have. There are even a few still life’s (the first I have ever done) sneaking in too.
My painting journey is now in its 13th year, today I choose to paint what inspires me and what I connect with and that’s what these works are. They could be described as ‘kiwiana’ but I suppose I am very Kiwi. I have a list of places in my head I want to paint, there is no shortage of drive, I’m very obsessed.
Technically these works are a lot more ‘wet on wet – alla Prima than most of my work to date. It’s a direction I see myself heading, although I never rule out indirect techniques.
You’ll find the small paintings in my Porfolio tab.
Painting Classes
If you follow me on social media you may have heard of the painting classes I have been teaching, this has kept me busy over the last few months. I intend to update the website with info about this going forward, at the moment a curriculum and way of communicating my process is evolving. I think the beginners oil class is nailed down and we’ve had lots of people discovering the beauty of oil paint over the past months.
Teaching classes has been incredibly satisfying, but analysing my approach, technique and process so can communicate what I do to students has been the most effective self development tool I have experienced in 13 years of painting.
I will share more about the classes soon.
Cheers,
Wayne
