New works – Tūātea, breaking wave series
Oct 1, 2018
I have been working on a new series of works over the past few weeks. The essence of the project is to get closer and more detailed than I ever have with the sea. I am working from photo references; I’m zooming as far in as I can and working on the split second as the wave crashes, ironically I then spend many many hours recreating this tiny moment.
Somehow I stumbled across the idea and then I realised the incredible beauty in that moment, the translucence, the droplets of seaspray and the light reflecting everywhere. Rather than a realistic background I’m playing with the idea of a toned gradient, in this way it is more a wave portrait but it is also giving contrast that emphasises the translucence and the seaspray. I admit I am very excited and absolutely loving this new work.
Cheers,
Wayne
